The first arrived in only seconds and I followed him down to the ground as I drank. It seemed like I could never get full. A pair of strong hands grabbed me from behind and pulled me off, but it was too late for his comrade. The lights were faded from his eyes. I jerked against the force of the pull and as the hold released a horrendous shriek split the air. The arm felt very light, with no pressure fighting against me. The spray of blood from the twitching death of the man hit my face, my chest as I dropped the limply twitching arm.
I hated to waste the blood but I twisted his head backward until it snapped and he flopped back in eternal surrender. Two sets of footsteps ran up the road toward the silent car. Thumping on the hood and the shouts of “Infected” and the car left in a spurt of thrown gravel. I let them go.
The burning blood settled into me and filled me with healing and strength. I looked up at the sky, blank and swirling stars and the mists of endless time stared back. A howl fell out of my upturned mouth and drifted up to meet their stares. – My Sweet Infected – Chapter 12
